EDUCATING VOTERS

The League of Women Voters-Hill Country along with American Association of University Women, Hill Country Branch, will hold a forum for candidates in the upcoming elections.  Candidates for the following offices were invited to participate: U.S. Representative District 21, Texas Senate District 24, Texas House District 53, State Board of Education Region 5, and Fourth Court of Appeals, Place 6. Hopefully, each of you can attend the event on Saturday, September 17th, from 10:00 am until 12:30 pm, at the Dietert Center, 451 Guadalupe St. in Kerrville. The format will be different than previous forums and will allow for more direct contact with the candidates. Participants will remain seated around tables and candidates will join them, rotating at specific intervals, allowing the attendees to ask direct questions of the candidates.  “Ground Rules for Public Discussion” will be provided to encourage positive and open conversation.

Candidates who have agreed to participate in the forum include Tom Wakely and Mark Loewe for U.S. House District 21, Irene Rios and Jason Pulliam for Texas 4th Court of Appeals Place 6, Dr. Rebecca Bell-Metereau and Ricardo Perkins for Texas State Board of Education District 5, Jennie Lou Leeder for Texas Senate District 24, and Stephanie Ertel and Andrew Murr for Texas House District 53.  Brian Holk candidate for Texas House District 53 and Dr. Dawn Buckingham candidate for Texas Senate District 24 declined due to scheduling conflicts.  Invitees who did not respond to invitations were Ken Mercer for Texas State Board of Education, Lamar Smith and Antonio Diaz for U.S. House District 21.

LWV Texas Voter’s Guide will be available in electronic and hard copy format in mid-October.  Our local League has ordered 500 hard copies to be distributed locally.  Vote411.org will also have candidate information available online by mid-October.
